What never goes into a chatbot

Module 1: AI in the numbers

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. You want help with a spreadsheet formula. Which of these is safe to paste into a free public chatbot (an AI chat tool anyone can use online)?

Finance people handle the data companies guard most: bank statements, payroll, tax ID numbers (the numbers tax authorities use to identify you), client contracts and unpublished results.

A public chatbot is outside your employer's control. What you paste may be stored, seen by the provider's staff or used to train models, depending on the tool. It can't be pulled back.

For a listed company (one whose shares trade on a stock exchange), unpublished results are inside information. Sharing them can break securities law (the rules for trading shares), not only company rules.

      Ask with fake data

You rarely need the real data. A prompt (the message you send to the AI) can use a made-up table with the same layout:

Here is a made-up table with the same columns as my real one:
Date | Supplier | Amount. Write a formula that totals the Amount
column by month. I'll apply it to the real file myself, inside our
      approved tools.

      Fill the gaps

Fill the gaps in the same prompt.
