Working next to robots

Module 1: What AI already does on the floor

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. According to OSHA, when do many robot accidents happen?

More warehouses and factories now have robots: mobile robots that carry shelves or totes, and robot arms at stations. Working next to them is part of the job. This course doesn't give safety advice. It points you to the rules, which your site turns into its own procedures and training.

What OSHA's robotics page says:

  • "Many robot accidents occur during non-routine operating conditions, such as programming, maintenance, testing, setup, or adjustment."
  • During those jobs, a worker "may temporarily be within the robot's working envelope" (the space the robot can reach).
  • "There are currently no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry." So the rules come from general standards and your site's procedures.

A worked example

Step by step

What one worker did when a mobile robot stopped in the middle of their aisle.

Step 1 of 3: Didn't touch it

Step 1 of 3

Didn't touch it

Moving or reaching into a robot's area isn't their job unless they're trained and named for it.
