Guess first, no penalty. Anthropic's study measured how much of a sales rep's core tasks AI is actually used for at work. For wholesale and manufacturing sales reps, what did it find?
Big numbers about AI and sales get passed around without the details that make them true. Here are three findings, with what each one actually measured.
- Tasks AI is used for. In Anthropic's study Labor market impacts of AI (5 March 2026), Figure 3 lists sales representatives in wholesale and manufacturing (except technical and scientific products) at 62.8% observed exposure: the share of the job's core tasks that Claude is actually used for. The top task: "Contact customers to demonstrate products and solicit orders".
- What employers expect. In the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, a survey of over 1,000 employers, salespersons are among the jobs expected to grow most in numbers by 2030, while telemarketers are among the fastest declining.
- What it doesn't mean. "Covers a task" means AI is used for it. It doesn't mean the job disappears.
