The phrases, translated
HR language is written to be deniable. Here is what the most common lines mean in practice.
"We will get back to you."
They probably won't. No reply in 5 to 7 days means no. You are a backup at best, so keep applying.
Read: Likely rejection
"We are still evaluating candidates."
They have a favorite and you are not it, yet. You stay on the list in case their first choice falls through.
Read: Stall
"Your profile is impressive, but..."
The 'but' cancels everything before it. A polished rejection: they liked something and found a dealbreaker.
Read: Rejection
"We'll keep your resume on file for future openings."
The file is a database no one opens. This is the standard corporate no. Reply once if you want, then move on.
Read: Rejection
"Can you share your expected salary?"
A good sign. They are checking whether you fit the budget, which means they are considering you seriously.
Read: Positive signal
"We'd like to schedule a next round."
You cleared the current stage. They are investing more time in you, so prepare properly for this one.
Read: Strong positive
"The position has been put on hold."
Sometimes true, sometimes a soft no. If they do not reach out within 2 to 3 weeks, move on.
Read: Uncertain
"We went with a candidate whose experience more closely aligns."
Someone else matched this exact role better. Not a verdict on your ability, so apply to their other openings.
Read: Respectful rejection
Common questions
What does 'we will get back to you' mean from HR?
Usually one of two things: they have not decided yet, or it is a soft no. If you hear nothing within 5 to 7 business days, treat it as a no and keep applying.
How does the HR email decoder work?
Paste the email or message. The decoder reads the language, tone, and common HR patterns and tells you whether it is a rejection, a positive signal, or a stall.
Is the HR email decoder free?
Yes. Every tool here is free. Ads pay for it, you don't. No trial, no card, no locked features.
Can it decode WhatsApp or LinkedIn messages from recruiters?
Yes. Paste any text: email, WhatsApp, LinkedIn message, or SMS. The wording patterns are the same everywhere.
What does 'your profile is shortlisted' actually mean?
You passed an initial screen, and you are still competing with other candidates. It is a positive signal, not a guarantee. Keep applying while you wait.
How do I know if an HR email is a rejection?
Watch for 'we decided to move forward with other candidates', 'we will keep your resume on file', or a thank-you with no next step. Each of those closes the door politely.
Stop rereading that email. Decode it.
Then put the energy where it pays: check your resume with the free ATS checker or decode the next posting with the JD decoder.
