Guess first, no penalty. In a 2026 New York Fed survey of service firms in its region, what share said they had laid off workers because of AI in the past six months?
The New York Fed asked service firms in the New York and northern New Jersey region how AI changed their hiring (Liberty Street Economics, September 2026). "Only 4 percent of service firms reported laying off workers in response to AI over the past six months". About 15% "said they had hired fewer workers than they would have if not for AI use", and about 13% "said they had hired more workers due to AI". For recruiters (the people who find and hire candidates), AI is changing hiring plans in both directions.
