AWS Solutions Architect is the most popular AWS certification in 2026. Roughly 800,000 people hold the Associate version and 200,000 hold the Professional. The cert is the closest thing to a universal cloud passport.
But the certification game has changed. AWS adds new services every month and the exam questions are harder than they used to be. Here is what you need to know to decide if SAA or SAP is worth your time in 2026.
What the Cert Actually Tests#
AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) covers:
- Design resilient architectures (28%)
- Design high-performing architectures (24%)
- Design secure architectures (26%)
- Design cost-optimized architectures (22%)
You will be given scenarios and asked to pick the best AWS service combinations. The questions are wordy and time pressure is real (65 questions in 130 minutes).
The Professional version (SAP-C02) goes deeper into:
- Multi-account strategies
- Migration architectures (lift-and-shift, refactor)
- Cost optimization at scale
- Complex hybrid architectures
- Disaster recovery patterns
The Professional is significantly harder. Pass rates are around 50% even for experienced practitioners.

Salary Impact of AWS Certs#
Real data on AWS cert salary impact in 2026:
No AWS cert: baseline salary AWS Cloud Practitioner: +$5K (minimal impact, entry level) AWS SAA: +$15K to $25K AWS SAP: +$25K to $45K AWS Security Specialty: +$30K to $50K Multiple AWS certs: +$40K to $70K
The cert premium is highest at consulting firms (Deloitte, Accenture, PwC) where having certified staff helps win client business. Big tech (AWS, Google, Meta) cares less about certs and more about experience.
In India, AWS certs have a larger relative impact:
- SAA: +₹2-5L
- SAP: +₹5-10L
- Specialty certs: +₹3-8L
SAA vs SAP: Which First#
The Associate (SAA) is meant first. AWS recommends 1+ year AWS experience before SAA. The exam costs $150.
The Professional (SAP) is meant after SAA. AWS recommends 2+ years AWS experience. Exam costs $300.
You can technically skip SAA and go straight to SAP, but most people fail their first attempt at SAP this way. The SAA gives you broad foundation that the SAP assumes you have.
Recommended path:
- AWS Cloud Practitioner (optional, easy starter)
- SAA-C03 Associate
- Wait 12 months and get real experience
- SAP-C02 Professional
Study Plan for SAA#
Total study time: 80 to 150 hours depending on background.
If you are a developer/sysadmin with no AWS:
- Stephane Maarek Udemy course (60 hours)
- Tutorials Dojo practice tests (40 hours)
- Hands-on labs (30 hours)
- Total: 130 hours over 3 months
If you have 1 year AWS experience:
- Skim Stephane Maarek (20 hours)
- Tutorials Dojo practice tests (20 hours)
- Read whitepapers (10 hours)
- Total: 50 to 60 hours over 6 weeks
Key resources:
- Stephane Maarek SAA course on Udemy (the most popular)
- Adrian Cantrill (deeper, better for serious learners)
- Tutorials Dojo practice tests by Jon Bonso (closest to real exam)
- AWS Skill Builder (free official labs)
- AWS Whitepapers (read 4 to 6 of them)
Services to Know Cold#
For SAA, deep knowledge of:
Core compute: EC2, Lambda, ECS, EKS, Fargate Storage: S3, EBS, EFS, FSx Database: RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora, ElastiCache Networking: VPC, ELB, Route 53, CloudFront, API Gateway Security: IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, WAF, Shield Monitoring: CloudWatch, CloudTrail Application integration: SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions
For each service, know:
- Use cases (when to pick it)
- Pricing model
- Key limits
- How it integrates with other AWS services
- Common patterns (caching with CloudFront, queues with SQS)
Exam Day Tips#
The SAA exam is tricky because:
- Questions are wordy (read carefully)
- Multiple answers seem correct (pick the best)
- AWS-specific terminology matters (read every word)
- Time pressure: 130 min for 65 questions = 2 min each
Strategy:
- Read the question first, then the answers
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers
- Look for "cost-optimized" vs "highly available" vs "secure" keywords
- Mark hard questions and come back
- Trust your gut on second-guessed answers
Most people score 720-820 (passing is 720). Aim for 800+ on practice tests before taking the real exam.
SAP Study Plan#
The Professional exam is brutal. Study time: 200 to 300 hours for most people.
Resources:
- Adrian Cantrill SAP course (deepest material)
- Stephane Maarek SAP course
- Tutorials Dojo SAP practice tests
- Re:Invent videos on multi-account, hybrid, migrations
- AWS whitepapers (read 10+)
The SAP differs from SAA in three ways:
- Question length: 1-2 paragraphs instead of 3-4 sentences
- Multi-account focus (Organizations, Control Tower, Landing Zone)
- Migration patterns (7 Rs of migration, application discovery)
You need real AWS experience for SAP. Studying without hands-on time rarely works.
When AWS Certs Are NOT Worth It#
Skip AWS certs if:
- You already work as a cloud engineer at a major company with no cert pressure
- You are very senior (staff+) and your reputation is the qualification
- Your company uses Azure or GCP primarily
- You hate exams and the material does not interest you
Pursue AWS certs if:
- You want to break into cloud roles from a different field
- Your employer pays for certs and bonuses for passing
- You are consulting and need credibility with clients
- You are job-hunting and need to stand out from non-certified candidates
- You want to specialize deeper in AWS (specialty certs)
Specialty Certs#
After SAA, the specialty certs are where the real money is:
-
AWS Security – Specialty: best for cloud security engineers. +$30K to $50K salary impact.
-
AWS Advanced Networking – Specialty: hardest AWS cert. +$30K to $40K. Few people have it which makes it valuable.
-
AWS Machine Learning – Specialty: pairs well with data/ML roles. +$25K to $40K.
-
AWS Database – Specialty: niche but valuable in data-heavy companies. +$20K to $35K.
-
AWS Data Analytics – Specialty: for data engineering roles. +$20K to $35K.
Don't pursue all of these. Pick 1 to 2 that align with your career goals.
Maintaining Your AWS Cert#
AWS certs expire every 3 years. To maintain:
- Re-take the exam (most common)
- Take a higher-level exam (SAP recertifies SAA automatically)
Recertification is mostly the same material with newer services. Plan a few weeks of refresh study.
SAA vs SAP for India Market#
For Indian engineers targeting Indian roles, SAA matters more than SAP. Most Indian IT services companies care about the basic cert (SAA) and stop there.
For Indian engineers targeting US remote roles or global companies, SAP is much more valuable. The SAP signals you can handle complex architectures, which is what global companies need.
AWS vs Other Cloud Certs#
If you can only do one cloud cert in 2026:
- AWS SAA: most jobs globally
- Azure AZ-104 Administrator: best for enterprise
- GCP ACE Associate: smallest market but growing in tech-forward companies
The Indian market in 2026 has Azure roles outnumbering AWS roles in some segments (especially Microsoft-heavy enterprises). For Indian job seekers, getting both AWS SAA and Azure AZ-104 is the safest play.
Use our resume builder to add AWS certs in the right place. They should go in a dedicated Certifications section near the top, not buried in skills.
Bottom Line#
AWS SAA in 2026 is still worth it for most cloud careers. ROI is high (3 months study, +$20K salary). SAP is worth it if you want to specialize deeper or move into architect roles. Pick one specialty cert after SAA to maximize your differentiation. Skip the certs entirely if you are already a senior engineer with strong cloud experience.
