Amsterdam has a higher density of well-paying English-speaking tech jobs than almost any other European city. The salaries are not Swiss, but the work-life balance, English fluency, and tax structure (30 percent ruling) make it one of the most attractive moves in Europe.

Here is a real list of the 25 best companies hiring in Amsterdam for 2026, with salary ranges, culture notes, and visa support.

Why Amsterdam Punches Above Its Weight#

Three reasons.

First, the 30 percent ruling. Non-Dutch nationals moving to the Netherlands for work can have 30 percent of their salary paid tax-free for up to 5 years. This effectively boosts your take-home by roughly 20 percent compared to the headline number.

Second, English everywhere. The Netherlands has the highest English proficiency in the EU. Engineering teams operate entirely in English. You can live in Amsterdam for years without learning Dutch and function fine.

Third, density of tech employers. Booking.com, Adyen, Uber, Netflix, Tesla, ASML, Philips, and dozens of fast-growing startups are all here or have major offices. Job-hopping is easy because options are everywhere.

The 30 Percent Ruling Explained#

This is the single biggest financial reason to move to Amsterdam for work.

If you are hired from outside the Netherlands and meet the salary threshold (€46,107 for 2026 standard, €35,048 if you have a master's and are under 30), your employer can pay 30 percent of your salary tax-free for up to 5 years.

Practical example: an engineer earning €100,000 base.

Without the ruling: gross €100,000 minus tax brings home roughly €60,500 per year. With the ruling: €70,000 is taxed normally, €30,000 is tax-free. Take-home rises to roughly €72,400 per year.

That is roughly €12,000 per year more in your pocket.

The ruling was scaled back in 2024. The percentage steps down: 30 percent for the first 20 months, 20 percent for the next 20 months, 10 percent for the final 20 months. Still huge over the 5 years.

You apply for the ruling jointly with your employer in the first 4 months of employment. Most major Amsterdam employers handle the paperwork for you.

Cost of Living Reality#

Amsterdam is expensive, but not Swiss-expensive.

Rent (2026)

  • 1-bedroom city center: €1,800 to €2,500
  • 1-bedroom outside center (Oost, West, Noord): €1,400 to €1,900
  • Family apartment (2-3 bedrooms): €2,500 to €4,500
  • Shared flat: €750 to €1,200 per room

Daily costs

  • Lunch at a casual place: €12 to €18
  • Dinner at a normal restaurant: €25 to €45
  • Beer at a bar: €4.50 to €6.50
  • Monthly transit pass: €100 to €120
  • Bike (used, decent): €150 to €350

A senior engineer making €110,000 with the 30 percent ruling lives very well in Amsterdam. Even a mid-level engineer at €75,000 with the ruling is comfortable.

Application timing

Amsterdam hiring is steady year-round. The Dutch take significant summer holiday in July and August. September is the big hiring month after summer break. December slows down again.

Interview process

Most Amsterdam companies run 4-5 rounds:

  1. Recruiter screen
  2. Hiring manager call
  3. Technical assessment (live coding, take-home, or both)
  4. System design or architecture
  5. Cultural / team match

Trading firms (Optiver, IMC, Flow) add quantitative and probability rounds.

Dutch directness

Dutch interviewers ask direct questions and expect direct answers. Avoid vague language. State preferences and opinions clearly. The interviewer is not being rude. They are being efficient.
