Bias learned from past hiring

Module 2: Hire fairly with AI in the loop

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. An AI screener learns from the resumes (candidates' written work histories) your company moved forward over the past ten years. What does it learn?

An AI screener scores resumes using patterns from past data. If past decisions favored one group, the tool can carry that pattern into every new decision, and faster than any person.

In 2018, Reuters reported that Amazon dropped an experimental recruiting tool after it penalized resumes that included the word "women's", as in "women's chess club captain".

A score looks neutral. Don't assume it is until someone checks.
