Guess first, no penalty. You have 20 minutes. Which task do you give an AI coding assistant first?
An AI coding assistant is a tool like GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code that writes and edits code from what you ask. It's fast at common code that's easy to check, and weak where the answer depends on things it can't see.
Anthropic's study Labor market impacts of AI (March 2026) found Claude is used for 74.5% of the core tasks of computer programmers, the top job in its Figure 3. "Covers a task" means AI is used for that task, not that the job disappears.
Good first jobs for AI: unit tests for code you wrote, boilerplate (the repetitive setup code every project needs), explaining code you didn't write, and small cleanups that don't change behavior. Keep for yourself: what to build, how services fit together, incidents and security calls.
The test is simple. Would a wrong answer be cheap to spot? Then hand it over. Unit tests are the best place to start: you'll know in seconds whether they pass, and whether they check real values.
A worked example
A prompt (the message you send to the AI) for your first win:
Write pytest tests for the function below.
Cover: one normal case, empty input, one bad input that should
raise an error, and one boundary value.
Each test checks an exact expected value, not just "is not None".
Don't change the function.

- 1.Run the prompt on one function you wrote this week, run the tests, and keep the ones that check exact values. Save the prompt in a note called "AI code review kit": each lesson in this module adds one piece.2 min
