Quick check
Guess first, no penalty. In most stores today, where does AI do its work?
You've watched self-checkouts go in, the store website get a chatbot (a program that answers typed questions), and the stock system start suggesting what to reorder. It's natural to ask what's left for the people on the floor.
Anthropic's 2026 study of how AI is used at work, which this course uses for job figures, doesn't report one for retail and store staff. So here are the tasks instead.
Where you'll meet AI
In stores, AI mostly works in the background or on the customer's own phone. Here's where you'll meet it:
- Chatbots on the store's website or app answer simple questions before a customer comes in, like opening hours, order status and the returns policy.
- Inventory systems suggest reorder quantities based on past sales.
- Scheduling software builds shift rotas (who works when) from the times the store is expected to be busy.
- Self-checkout handles scanning and paying, so you handle the alerts, the age checks and the items that won't scan.
- AI chat tools (apps that write answers to what you type) on a phone can compare two products from their spec sheets, the maker's list of product details.
- The same tools turn rough notes into a clear shift handover (the note for the next shift), draft a shelf sign, translate a simple phrase, or summarize a long policy memo from head office.
What these share: the tool works from what it's given, like past sales, a spec sheet or your notes. It doesn't see the shelf or the customer.
Give it every fact
A prompt is the message you type into the tool. Since the tool can't see the shelf, this one gives it every fact:
Draft the words for a shelf sign.
Product: oat milk, 1 litre. Offer: 2 for $3, ends Sunday.
Use only these facts. Under 12 words. Friendly.
Fill the gaps
Fill the gaps so the tool has nothing to guess.
Prompt
Draft the words for a shelf sign. Product: . Offer: . Use . Under 12 words. Friendly.
Try it
Your steps, about 1 minutes
- 1.Pick a product on offer in your section. Write a shelf-sign prompt like the one above and try it in an AI tool your store allows. Check the sign against the shelf label.1 min
