Quick check
Guess first, no penalty. A report says employers expect fewer cashier jobs by 2030. What is that?
Every new self-checkout lane makes some store workers wonder if their job is next. That fear is fair, and it deserves a straight answer. These findings describe jobs in general: background, not a statement about your store.
What the Anthropic study measures
Anthropic's study Labor market impacts of AI, by economists Maxim Massenkoff and Peter McCrory, published on 5 March 2026, looks at what people actually use Claude (Anthropic's AI chat tool) for at work. The authors call this observed exposure: the tasks AI is used for today, not the tasks it could do in theory.
Its Figure 3, "Most exposed occupations", doesn't list retail and store staff. For context, in computer and math jobs, among the most exposed, AI could perform 94% of tasks in theory but covers about a third of them in practice today. "Covers a task" means AI is being used for it. It does not mean the job disappears.
About 30% of workers have zero exposure, in hands-on jobs done in person like cooks, mechanics, lifeguards and bartenders. Since late 2022, the study found no systematic rise in unemployment for highly exposed workers.
What employers expect
The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, a survey of over 1,000 employers, touches both sides of a store job. Employers expect "Cashiers and Ticket Clerks" and "Material-Recording and Stock-Keeping Clerks" to be among the fastest declining jobs from 2025 to 2030. "Salespersons" are among the jobs with the largest growth in absolute numbers.
These are employers' expectations, not counts of jobs lost, and they reflect many trends, not AI alone. Read together, they suggest a shift inside the store: fewer people at the till and in the count, more people helping customers buy.
Say it the honest way
The World Economic Forum surveyed over 1,000 employers.
They expect fewer cashier jobs and more salesperson jobs by 2030.
That's what employers expect, not a count of jobs lost.
