What the 67.1% figure means

Module 1: What AI already does in your job

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. A study found AI is used for 67.1% of the core tasks of data entry keyers. What does that mean?

Core tasks are the main tasks of a job. In Anthropic's data, Claude (Anthropic's AI chat tool) is already used for 67.1% of the core tasks of data entry keyers.

The figure comes from an Anthropic study by economists Maxim Massenkoff and Peter McCrory, Labor market impacts of AI, published on 5 March 2026. It measured which job tasks Claude is actually used for in real work ("observed exposure"), not what AI could do in theory. The figures here are from its Figure 3, "Most exposed occupations".

Data entry is near the top of the list. For comparison, the same study puts customer service representatives at 70.1% and medical record specialists at 66.7%.

What "covers a task" means

"Covers a task" means AI is being used for that task, not that the job disappears. When AI covers typing data from PDFs into a sheet, someone still checks the numbers and owns the record.

Think of it like a calculator in an accounts team. The calculator does the arithmetic. A person still decides which numbers to add and signs off the result.

Before and after

The same figure, read two ways.

Panic reading

AI covers 67.1% of data entry tasks, so two thirds of us will lose our jobs.
