What the numbers really measure

Module 1: What AI already does in your job

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. AI could do 94% of tasks in computer and math jobs in theory. How much does it cover in real use?

An Anthropic study by economists Maxim Massenkoff and Peter McCrory, Labor market impacts of AI, published on 5 March 2026, measured which job tasks Claude (Anthropic's AI chat tool) is actually used for in real work ("observed exposure"), not what AI could do in theory.

Theory tells you what a tool might handle. Observed use tells you what people are really doing with it at work today. For example, AI could do 94% of tasks in computer and math jobs in theory, but covers about a third of them in practice today.

The figures

Core tasks are the main tasks of a job. A task is one piece of a job, like typing data from a form into a spreadsheet. The decimals come from the study's Figure 3, "Most exposed occupations". The study's own text rounds them, to 75% for programmers and 67% for data entry.

JobObserved exposure (Figure 3)
Computer programmers74.5%
Customer service representatives70.1%
Data entry keyers67.1%
Medical record specialists66.7%
Financial and investment analysts57.2%

67.1% of core tasks covered means AI is used for much of the typing and extracting. It does not mean two thirds of data entry jobs are gone. The study also found no systematic rise in unemployment for highly exposed workers since late 2022.

Check an article

A prompt is the message you send to a tool like Claude. Try this one:

Here is an article: [paste the text]
Does its main figure describe what AI could do in theory, or what
people really use it for at work? Quote the line that tells you.
If the article doesn't say, tell me that.
