Recompute every number AI gives you

Module 2: Do the job better with AI

Course outline

Spot the mistakes

Guess first, no penalty. You asked AI to convert a drawing dimension from millimetres to metres, and to add three pipe runs for an order. Tap the rows that are wrong before they go on the order.

Recompute before anything is ordered

AI tools often get sums and unit conversions wrong, and they state a wrong total in the same calm voice as a right one.

Recompute every total and conversion yourself, or with a calculator you trust. Write the unit beside every number, then check the unit against the drawing's own note.

A worked example

A prompt is the message you type to the AI. This one asks for the working:

Convert these pipe runs from metres to millimetres, then add them.
Show each step and the unit. Don't round until the last line.
Runs: 2.4 m, 3.1 m, 1.7 m.

What if

Change a run and watch the total.

First run

2.4 m

Second run

3.1 m

Third run

1.7 m

Total length

Total length: 7.2 m

An estimate from the numbers you entered, not a forecast.

Change the second run to 3.4 m. The total should move by exactly 0.3 m, to 7.5 m.

Your turn

Fill the gaps

Fill each gap in your check request.

Check request

Convert every length to millimetres, . . Write the unit beside every value, .

Try it

Your steps, about 2 minutes

  1. 1.Take one set of lengths or quantities from a recent job, or a made-up one. Recompute every total and unit conversion yourself, then compare with what the tool gave.2 min

Practice

Question 1 of 2

The drawing note says all dimensions are in mm. The AI wrote a site note that says "250 in" for the same dimension. What do you do?
