Run the plain-text test on your resume

Module 1: Resume and ATS keywords

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. How can you see your resume (the document that lists your work and skills) roughly the way an ATS (software that reads job applications) does?

You can check your file in one minute, with no special tool:

  1. Open your PDF or .docx.
  2. Select all the text and copy it.
  3. Paste it into a plain text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit.

Read what appears. If it comes out jumbled, with lines mixed up and contact details missing, an ATS may read it jumbled too. Fix the layout before you apply.

Let AI clean up a messy section

If a section needs rewriting, ask an AI chat tool (an app that writes answers to what you type) to clean it up. A prompt is the message you send to the tool. This one works:

Here is one section of my resume: [paste the section]

Rewrite it as plain single-column text that an ATS can parse.
Keep [job title], [employer] and [dates] on separate lines.
Use standard headings and no tables, columns, symbols or images.
Keep the wording close to the original and do not add new facts.

Fill the gaps

Fill the gaps so the AI fixes the layout and nothing else.

Prompt
