Refine the answer with targeted follow-ups

Module 1: Prompting that works

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. The AI's draft (its first version) has the right facts but is too long and too formal. What's the best next message?

A prompt is the message you send to the AI. The first answer is a draft, not the final version. Follow-ups, the short replies you send next, work best when they point at one thing:

Make this shorter. Keep it under [80] words.
More formal. I am writing to [a client / my manager].
Keep paragraph 2. Rewrite paragraph 1 so it starts with the result.
Turn this into a table with [3] columns.

Change one or two things at a time. If you ask for five changes at once and the answer gets worse, you won't know which change caused it.

Fill the gaps

Fill the gaps in a targeted follow-up.

Prompt

. .

Start a fresh chat when it gets confused

A long chat carries its whole history. Old mistakes stay in the context and can keep coming back.

Signs that you need a new chat: it repeats a mistake you already corrected, it uses details from ten messages ago, or the answers get longer and vaguer. Start clean, and paste only what matters: the task, your style example, and the latest draft.
