What never goes into a chatbot

Module 4: Privacy and safe use at work

Course outline

Quick check

Guess first, no penalty. You want a chatbot (an AI chat tool) to fix the tone of a work email. Which part is fine to paste as it is?

A public AI tool is not a locked box. Paste a draft as it is and its private details leave your control. Once you press send, three things can happen to your text:

  • The provider stores it. Your words may sit on their systems for a period of time.
  • People may read it. Providers can review some conversations for safety reasons.
  • It may train future models. On some plans and settings, your text is used to improve the model.

Your company policy is the final word. The tool's own settings do not replace it. Check what your employer allows before you use any AI tool for work. If the policy is silent on a type of data, treat it as data to keep out.
